If you are planning on going ice fishing this winter in Northern Ontario, you’re going to make sure that you’re prepared. For you to land that big walleye, you’re going to need to bring along the right equipment.
I know that you probably did all your homework before you set out for this big trip, but a little extra advise isn’t going to hurt.
You probably chatted with some friends and even checked out some local fishing stores and talked to someone named Bob.
I know that you’re busy and that you want to spend your time on more important things than travelling from store to store picking up some random gear pieces. That’s why we did some homework at Ice Bungalows and created a great list of useful gear that every ice angler should own.
The gear that I am going to mention are some pieces that have worked for me in the past, and are ranked high on Amazon. You can pick up this equipment quickly and easily, and I’m sure it will benefit you as you head out hoping to catch that trophy fish.
After you get a license, you need to make sure that you have the necessary gear for landing that prized walleye. The very first piece of gear that you’re going to need is a perfect rod for the job. You don’t have to have the most expensive rod on the market, but you don’t want it to break the first day either.
The Ugly Stik USGXICE26LCBO is a great rod and reel that will provide you with a great ice fishing experience.
Ugly stick is one of the industry’s leaders in fishing products and purchasing this rod will give you the confidence that it’s a quality product.
If you are looking for a one-stop shop and are not sure if ice fishing is for you, I suggest that you take a look at the Celsius R2F Multispecies Ice Combo. This combo set gives you everything that you need to start ice fishing. It comes with a reel and rod (27″ medium/heavy fiberglass blank and Graphite reel pre-spooled with 8 lb. mono) and 1 large jigging spoon, 1 medium jigging spoon, 6 hooks, 2 non-lead split shot, 1 large slip float, 2 beads and bobber stops and 1 depth finder. It also comes with a reusable tackle box so you can begin to add your own gear to it over time.
For ice fishing, I suggest that you grab some Goture Ice Jigging Fishing Lures to give you a great advantage. I have found that the Goture ice fishing lures work very well, and I have pulled up several large walleyes from the chilly waters under the frozen tundra because of them. Of course, they were never as big as the ones that got away.
You probably want to grab a couple of tip-ups as well to help you relax during your stay at Ice Bungalows. Tip-ups are great because they alert you when you have a fish on your line. You can relax on your bunk with a refreshing drink or some snacks, engage in some deep conversation, and know that if you have a fish you’ll be able to pull it up.
Another great thing to have around are line leaders. The last time we were fishing at Ice Bungalows, we got a pike on the line but lost him when he cut the line with his teeth. Using a 90 pound fluorocarbon leader is the best way to prevent that from happening.
It’s important to make sure that you’re prepared for your ice fishing adventure. We suggest that you grab a good LED headlamp. The Mossy Oak 2-Piece Headlamp with a Tatical Flashlight works well, and has a high rating on Amazon. This headlamp is waterproof, works hard for 80 hrs at a time and has a great design with a comfortable fit. Having the tactical flashlight around will be useful as well (especially at night if you have to go to the bathroom).
If you are not staying in a hut that has power, then we suggest grabbing a small generator like the King Canada Generator. This small generator will be a great help to you during your stay. If you are not bringing a generator than maybe a small power bank would be handy to keep your phone charged during your stay. On the lake, you do get great cell reception so having a charged cell phone is both practical and essential in case of an emergency.
Products for Venturing Outside
The reason why we get so many people coming to a place that offers ice huts is because we make ice fishing comfortable again. Enjoy our ice bungalows on the middle of the lake, and sleep on the lake with a propane furnace, stove and BBQ.
There are times that you may want to go outside and try your luck somewhere else, and that is why you may want to invest in some of these products.
Make sure that you grab some Palmyth Flexible Fishing Gloves so your hands always stay warm during those cold Northern Ontario days. These gloves have flip caps on three fingers which makes it great for changing lures or fixing a tangled line. These gloves will be a great fit and are incredibly functional.
If you decide to stray away from the bungalow for a while and make a separate fishing hole somewhere else, I’d grab an Eskimo Pop-up Portable Ice Shelter. This 2 person pop-up tent is great for adventuring around the lake and will protect you from the cold wind that’s normal for any lake in Ontario. While you’re at it, you should pick up a Mr. Heater to put in that portable pop-up tent. Mr. Heaters are an indoor-safe portable radiant heater which is clean burning and nearly 100% efficient. This is sure to keep that portable pop-up tent nice and toasty warm.
If you’re looking for some more advanced tools for your ice fishing adventure then I would suggest taking a peek at the LuckyLaker Portable Fish Sonar.
This device will tell you the water depth, fish location, and your underwater surroundings before you drop a hook. Fish finders are not needed for ice fishing, but they are fun to have.
You could use the Deeper Smart Fishfinder PRO+ if you’re looking for a smart device that will connect to your phone or tablet.
I want to make sure that you understand that fish finders are not necessary needed to catch fish, but they do give you some extra data to make some calculated decisions, and they are a lot of fun.
We always have a great time ice fishing, and being prepared makes it even more enjoyable. When you are ice fishing make sure that you remember to stay safe and have a good time.
If you have never tried Ice Bungalows then I suggest that you give us a call and make a reservation today. We are one of the best places to ice fish in Northern Ontario.
